Chris
Romeike is a cinematographer and filmmaker who has been freelancing
in the Toronto film/tv and commercial industry for the past six years.
A graduate of the Media Arts and Film program at Ryerson Polytechnic
University Chris has developed an innovative and diverse visual style.
Between 1995 and 1999 he worked extensively with Cuppa Coffee Animation
as their in-house D.P., lighting director and live action director.
While there shooting a variety of inventive "live action"
television openers, commericals, shorts and stop-motion animation his
work received numerous awards. During this time Chris continued shooting,
directing and editing his own work: Jumbo Memsahb - a dance film featuring
Kimberly Glasco of the National Ballet for Bravo!, music videos including
the MuchMusic Video Award winner Musical Essence and the short lyrical
film Nautical Mind about the journey of the tallship True North sailing
from Lake Ontario to Cape Breton. As a D.P. he also continued to shoot
other directors' work: his first feature was the documentary PITCH,
which won at the 1997 Toronto Independent Film Festival and has become
a cult hit. In 1996 he shot a half-hour docu-portrait of Ani DiFranco
on the road in Ontario and NY and the special feature documentary Citi
Sonatina for Bravo! In 2000, he worked with director Maria Teresa Larrain
and producer Tina Hahn on a one-hour documentary about the Community
Arts Biennale 2000, Passionate Involvement.
In
1999 Chris traveled for six months to South East Asia, North Africa
and crossed the Altantic aboard a freighter, compiling photographs for
a show and book. Inspired by his travels and a love for the spontaneous
Chris has been concentrating on creative, innovative documentaries for
screen and tube, most recently shooting Genie Award winning director
Brenda Longfellow's latest film Tina in Mexico. He has also been doing
work with War Child Canada, which has taken him most recently to Sri
Lanka and Iraq. In the realm of Television, Chris has shot two documentary
series: Zoo Diaries (season 2/2001) for the Life Network, Mass Appeal
(2000) for Bravo! as well as a CBC Life and Times on Elizabeth Manley
(2001).
