Advocacy & Respite

Extend-A-Family matches one-on-one "buddies" or whole volunteer families to individuals with disabilities in order to provide respite for the caregivers.  Check your local telephone book to see if a chapter is in your community.

WrapAround is a "grassroots" organization which follows the motto "it takes a village to raise a child".  Families develop their own support network from friends, contacts and professionals with particular talents and/or resources.  With a WrapAround facilitator guiding the process, ways of assisting the family are brainstormed and enacted.  Check your local telephone book to see if an agency is in your community.

Parent's Advocacy in the School has locations in both Toronto and Thornhill (ON, Canada). Their professional group provides parent support (including testing, counselling, and legal services), educational assistants in the home, and advocacy workshops.

Camp Winston is a summer camp in Northern Ontario (Muskoka area) for individuals with TS and autism (in alternating weeks).  It's staff also offer workshops to parents.

Zodiac Swim and Specialty Camp, a camp for ages 3.5 - 15 in Toronto, is accredited by the Ontario Camping Association and meets Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada criteria for an appropriate camp for individuals with TS.

Parent Help Line is a national (Canadian), bilingual telephone and Internet service that gives parents a place to turn to for any parenting concerns, 24 hours a day. Any parent. Any issue. Any time. You're not alone.

Family Net is a web site dedicated to supporting families dealing with special needs.

Family Net is interested in raising awareness about Tourette Syndrome. In order to do that, they need to have families willing to be interviewed over the telephone. If you or any families you know of are interested in helping them profile TS, please contact Nancy Cherry.
